The four well-known Hindu pilgrimage sites, Char Dhams, are tucked away in Uttarakhand among the towering Himalayan hills. Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath are the four locations on the Char Dham circuit, a Hindu pilgrimage route. The Hindu religion considers all of these places to be extremely sacred. Every Hindu’s ultimate goal is to visit the sacred sites at least once in their lifetime in order to achieve salvation (Moksha). Together with Dharma, worship, Sanskaras, and celebrating religious holidays, the pilgrimage tirthayatra (Teerth Yatra) is considered one of the five responsibilities of every Hindu.When a devotee travels to frequently challenging places, leaving his problems at the feet of the Deity and forgetting everything but God, it is an exercise in willpower, humility, and faith. A pilgrimage is an intimate encounter, a direct connection between the seeker and the divine. A devotee goes on pilgrimage to see holy men and women, to worship at sacred shrines, to have darshan of Deities abiding in ancient sanctums. A pilgrim travels to visit God in order to have a transformative, blissful, and karma-eradicating encounter with the Divine.
